How Chess Began

Chess has been thought to have been invented by Persians, although there is no proof that anyone invented the game. At one time chess was thought to have been invented by the Greeks, Romans, Babylonians, Egyptians, Jews, Chinese, Hindus, Arabians and many others. There is some evidence that chess is about 5000 years old, the oldest game known.  According to Buddhists, war was consiered a criminal act.  Some people believe that chess was invented by Buddhists as a subsitute for war. Most authorities now believe that chess probably did  originate in India, spread to Persia, Arabia, and then to Western Europe.

In Europe, they had trouble with the usual names and rules of Persian chess. So, they changed it to reflect their lives and warfare, including kings, queens, knights, rooks and more so when you play chess you can imagine that you are a medieval army conquering your opponent.

The pieces have undergone many changes in the long history of chess. The king could be captured, which, is impossible in modern chess.  The queen has changed the most over time. This piece was once called by a name that meant “minister” or “general.”  In ancient times the queen moved only one square diagonally, not nearly as powerful as today.  500 years ago the queen was given her persent power.
